Dr Andrew Small


Dr Andrew Small is a General and Interventional Cardiologist practicing in the Brisbane metropolitan area. With over 15 years in private practice Andrew understand the needs of cardiac patients and aims to offer a comprehensive patient focused cardiology service. With a wealth of knowledge and clinical expertise within the cardiac catheter laboratory, Dr Small prides himself in offered a high standard of care for all his patients.

His special interests include:

  • Acute Coronary Syndrome
  • Coronary Angiogram and Coronary Angioplasty intervention

Dr Small graduated from the University of Queensland and completed his residency and physician training at the Princess Alexandra Hospital before training in Cardiology at the Royal Brisbane and Prince Charles Hospitals.

Andrew completed his Clinical Fellowship in Interventional Cardiology at the Royal Jubilee Hospital in British Columbia, Canada where he gained extensive experience in trans-radial coronary angiography and angioplasty. He is a Fellow of The Royal Australasian College of Physicians and the Cardiac Society of Australia and New Zealand.

Dr Kelly Stanton is an experienced clinical cardiologist who is committed to providing excellent clinical care for her patients. She has experience in all aspects of cardiac care and has a strong interest in the prevention and treatment of cardiovascular disease, including heart attacks, lipid disorders, heart failure and exercise and sports cardiology. She works with her patients to help them achieve their lifestyle and occupational goals which may be a simple stroll in the park or maintaining high level capacity at work, through to working with elite athletes.

In addition to being a clinical cardiologist, she is a cardiac imaging specialist with expertise in echocardiography, Cardiac MRI and Cardiac CT as well as exercising testing. She also specialises in occupational cardiology and in exercise and sports cardiology. She has speciality training in aviation medicine and is registered with Civil Aviation Safety Authority, as well as working with the Department of Defence to keep its members medically fit and healthy.

She completed her specialist training in Cardiology in 2014 at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in Sydney and has completed a Cardiac MRI fellowship at Cardiovascular Medical Resonance Sydney. She has submitted her PhD on the on the effect of exercise on cardiometabolic health, atherosclerosis and cardiac remodelling through the University of Sydney. One aspect of her PhD focused on lipids and the effect of exercising in reducing the risk of heart attacks. A second aspect of her PhD focused on Athletes Heart where she worked with elite athletes’ cyclists (National Road Series), soccer players (A-league club) and kayakers (previous Olympic athletes). She was awarded a National Health and Medical Research Council scholarship for her PhD and has published in international medical journals.

Dr Stanton is also a recipient of the Bryan Hudson medal for the highest achieving physician in Australia and New Zealand for her specialist exams. She has worked at both St George Hospital in Sydney and the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital as a consultant cardiologist.

She is passionate about advancing medical research and education and is currently the Medical Specialities Clinical Lead for the final year medical students at the University of Queensland Royal Brisbane Clinical Unit. She is an examiner for Doctors completing their specialist exams through the Royal Australian College of Physicians.

She has also spent time overseas working in countries within our region impacted by natural disasters to enhance the delivery of cardiology care within our region.

She currently provides consulting and testing services at Premier Cardiology located at the Wesley Hospital.

Nikki has worked in administration for in the private sector 35 years, with over half of this time in the health care field.  Seeing health care specialists can sometimes be overwhelming for patients. Nikki always aims to be understanding and help to provide an efficient yet friendly experience.

Kathreen
Receptionist

Kathreen provides administrative support to Doctors Small and Stanton alongside receptionist Nikki. Kathreen brings 12 years of cardiology administrative experience to the team, ensuring the practice runs smoothly and efficiently. In her spare time, Kathreen enjoys spending time with her partner and daughter and when possible – reading a book!

Lou
Sonographer

Lou has worked with Premier Cardiology since it’s inception at The Wesley Hospital in 2020. She has over 15 years experience performing transthoracic echocardiography and has worked in both the private and public sector. In her spare time Lou is a dedicated soccer mum.

Aggie
Sonographer

Agatha is an experienced accredited cardiac sonographer with a strong passion for all things heart related. She began her career in cardiac sciences at Christchurch hospital in 2005. Since completing the post graduate diploma in cardiac ultrasound in 2007, she has presented at numerous local and national meetings, facilitated various scanning workshops for sonographers and clinicians, published journal articles and book chapters and currently tutors regularly in university settings.

Practice Manager / Nurse

Nicky is a Registered Nurse. She has 34 years of experience, having specialised in Intensive Care nursing, Coronary Care nursing and Health Management. She works as the Practice Manager and Nurse within the practice. She is the busy mum of three active teenagers.
